The use of placental tissue in treating osteoarthritis (OA) is an area of ongoing research and clinical exploration. While not yet a widely established or FDA-approved treatment for OA, some studies suggest potential benefits. The rationale for its use stems from the rich composition of placental tissue, containing various growth factors, cytokines, and extracellular matrix (ECM) components that might influence joint repair and reduce inflammation.
Anti-inflammatory effects: Placental tissue components may modulate the inflammatory processes characteristic of OA, reducing pain and slowing disease progression.
Stimulation of cartilage repair: Growth factors present in placental tissue, such as TGF-β and IGF-1, may stimulate the repair and regeneration of damaged cartilage. However, the extent of this effect is still under investigation and results have been varied.
ECM remodeling
Placental tissue provides an ECM scaffold that can support the rebuilding of damaged cartilage and joint tissues.
Pain reduction
Some studies suggest that the use of placental tissue may lead to a reduction in pain associated with OA
